Abstract
The inverse scattering problem for spheres is solved using a two-step process: (1) recovery of the complex Mie coefficients A/sub n/, B/sub n/ of the scattered field from the field measurement, and (2) retrieval of the radius from these coefficients. Characteristic functions are introduced whose extremum property determines the radius uniquely from the Mie coefficients of the scattered field. A method of determining the Mie coefficients is also given.<>
