Abstract
Distribution system engineers have frequently to choose among different solutions under problem data uncertainty; in most cases, among the uncertainties the ones deriving from the presence of static converters must be included. In these conditions, the decision theory can offer efficient and valuable tools to choose the optimal solution. This paper refers to distribution electrical systems with static converters and considers three different approaches based on the decision theory for the economical sizing of medium voltage cables and passive filters under uncertainty (separately and together), properly accounting harmonics due to nonlinear load presence. In the last part of the paper the implementation and practical application of the sizing procedures are discussed and compared in some case studies.
