Abstract :
The authors present results from a new 16-element active array incorporating Gunn diodes (for 10 GHz oscillations). The Gunn diode heating problem previously encountered was overcome by using patch antennas in which the ground plane serves as a diode heat sink. An EIRP (equivalent isotropic radiated power) of 22 W was measured for this array. It is suggested that, by increasing the number of elements and using higher power diodes, EIRP of several hundred watts may be possible.<>
