Abstract
The speech synthesis techniques applicable to the recorded announcements of an ESS (electronic speech synthesis) system are discussed with regard to high-quality text-editing-type synthesis at a medium data rate (10-20 kbps). The hybrid coding techniques are useful for solving certain problems, but are not desirable for the word-based synthesis due to pitch change. The authors propose a hybrid coding scheme that can control the pitch and the data rate according to the quality. This technique is applied to a synthesis algorithm for the recorded announcements of the ESS switching system in Korea
