Abstract :
A description is given of the 256 port rural automatic exchange (RAX), currently under development. The hardware and software architecture of this system is dealt with in detail. It is shown that the architecture is modular and can incorporate flexibility in both hardware and software structure. The 256 port RAX covers the entire peripheral requirements of the telephone network
