Abstract :
The architecture of a new type of L-band multiple-beam antenna (ALE 3*5) for air traffic control (ATC) is presented. The electrical performance makes it equivalent to an antenna with very sharp horizon cutoff, large coverage angles, and high gain. The design requirements are as follows: frequency band of 1.25-1.35 GHz: a modular architecture with few basic components; the possibility of shaping, in the elevation plane, multiple receiving beams for an optimized sequential coverage of the assigned sector; full compatibility with the existing ATC radar systems; a low-sidelobe, high-gain pencil beam in the azimuthal plane; no active components in the-high-power part; and capability of operating without a radome.<>
