Abstract
Summary form only given. The application of l:N protection to wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems is proposed with caution by several researchers. Its aim is to reduce the total cost by removing expensive electronics parts but leaving comparatively cheap optical parts. If a certain transmission channel designed to be dropped at an optical add/drop multiplex (ADM) node is out of order, the protection channel should be dropped instead. Thus, this ADM should be switchable so that it drops the protection wavelength when ordered through a supervisory channel.
