Abstract
This proceedings volume includes the full and short papers presented at the IEEE SMI 2005 in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, USA, on 15-17 June, 2005. It is the seventh International Conference on Shape Modeling and Applications, which was sponsored by IEEE and scheduled within the International Convention on Shapes and Solids 2005 (ICS&S) together with the ACM Solid and Physical Modeling Symposium, with the aim of bringing together these two major international events in the field of shape modeling and processing. From 2001, the SMI conference became an annual event with the venue changing circularly from Asia to Europe and to America, and it includes the Eurographics/ACM SIGGRAPH Workshop on Implicit Surfaces as a special session. Previous conferences were organised in Japan (1997, 1999), Italy (2001), Canada (2002), and South Korea (2003). The International Convention on Shapes and Solids 2004 was held in Genova, Italy. In response to the call for papers, 80 papers were submitted out of which 30 full papers were selected for presentation and inclusion in this volume after reviewing by at least three referees per paper. The accepted contributions mainly focus on shape reconstruction, implicit and subdivision surfaces, surface meshes, topological and physically-based modeling. To highlight topics of particular importance, three additional contributions were invited. Finally, 10 short papers have been selected among the submitted short and full papers. The authors of the short papers were given time for short oral presentations, which is a new feature of the conference.
