Abstract
Summary form only given. A newly emerging competitor for optical fibre communications is graded-index polymer optical fiber (GI-POF). The promise of GI-POF in both telecommunications and data communications rests on its potential to deliver performance and reliability at low overall systems cost. Recent breakthroughs have been in bandwidth and loss of plastic optical fibers.
