Abstract
A comparative study of various conceptual phased array designs is being conducted to identify and quantify the complex dependence of the main array performance parameters and various aspects of practicality on the selected array architecture and feed network topology. The study is focused on planar and conformal phased array designs suited to high-speed, wide-angle electronic beam steering in two mutually orthogonal planes, such as required for search and track applications. Preliminary results show that if practicality considerations are used in addition to performance data as an equally relevant basis for the comparative evaluation of competing array designs then rather unusual and unconventional array configurations emerge, instead, as engineering solutions that combine advanced performance and practicality, while greatly reducing complexity. An example of such an unusual phased array architecture is shown.<>
