Abstract
Network capabilities are presented that have been made possible by the technological advances in the areas of photonics, microelectronics, microcomputers, and software. These capabilities will enable the service providers to meet the sophisticated user needs in a timely, cost-effective, and quality manner. Further, the authors discuss the major changes in current network architectures that will be needed to support the new capabilities in the most cost-effective manner. They conclude by demonstrating the relevance of these concepts to developing countries
