Abstract :
The benefits and widespread availability of light-weight, hand-held portable telephones has increased the growth potential for cellular networks. Handportables will probably be used extensively within buildings, especially in areas of commercial importance. However, buildings impose considerable attenuation to signal transmission, and this may cause restricted coverage in highly urban areas. To deal with this problem, system designers require a better understanding of signal characteristics inside buildings, and accurate knowledge of typical penetration losses. An experimental investigation of radio propagation into buildings in the UHF band has been underway at Liverpool University for some time
