Abstract
A summary is presented of Telebras R&D activities, highlighting the TROPICO system, which is an integrated family of digital switching equipment. The first two elements of the TROPICO family (TROPICO C AND TROPICO R) have already been completely industrialized and installed in the Brazilian network. The first commercial exchanges for TROPICO RA were installed in 1990. Efforts to attain a high degree of technological independence in telecommunications has proven to be very successful
