Abstract :
Summary form only given. Optical networking allows frequent dropping and adding of WDM channels, and has intensified the study of optical transients in amplified systems. In addition to transients from adding or dropping channels, there is also a fear that when the first channel is added to an amplified system, there could be a high-powered spike of light, possibly strong enough to damage optical components. It is important to understand this effect as well as the drop-add transients in EDFA systems.
