Abstract
A description is given of low capacity digital UHF radios of varying capacities from 6 to 120 channels developed for transmissions to rural areas. Due to fast urbanization and haphazard growth, impulse noise due to manmade sources is increasing in Indian urban and suburban areas. Two- and eight-Mb/s UHF radios are field tested in the presence of impulse noise. After field feedback, they are found superior to their analog alternatives for voice, VFT and voiceband data. The error performance is analyzed and countermeasures are discussed
