Abstract
As part of the general road improvements to the East London Road Network the Blackwall Tunnel had reached the end of its life and a replacement was required. Serco Systems Limited were to provide the new East London Traffic Control System (ELTRACS) for the Department of Transport under a contract let by the Corporation of London´s Traffic Control Systems Unit (TCSU). The new system to be installed was to be based on the National Motorway Communications System, Mark 2 (NMCS2), at the same time designing in the flexibility required for it to be modified and expanded to monitor and control traffic into the surrounding areas as the road network was extended and upgraded. The problems faced and how they were solved are briefly discussed
