Abstract
A new control strategy, internal unity power factor (IUPF), for operating an ASCI fed self controlled synchronous motor drive (SCSMD) is proposed. Analytical expressions to determine steady state characteristics of the ASCI fed SCSMD based on the proposed control strategy are obtained. It is shown that the IUPF operation and optimum airgap flux control of ASCI fed SCSMD enable the drive to operate at maximum torque and higher efficiency at all loads and speeds. The use of a personal computer for implementing the proposed control strategy in real time is discussed
