Abstract :
The authors discuss approaches that can be used to enforce global serializability and provide recovery in a multidatabase environment. They present solutions to the problem of transaction management in a multidatabase environment. Rather than developing a new global mechanism that duplicates the functionality of local systems, they attempt to take full advantage of the existence of their local concurrency control, commitment, recovery, and access granting facilities. They discuss the concept of a subtransaction ticket and the optimistic ticket method for multidatabase transaction management. They also describe a multidatabase recovery scheme that is based on write-ahead logs.<>
