Abstract :
This paper, proposes an image sequence coding scheme which combines wavelet decomposition and multiscale motion detection and compensation. The wavelet transform decomposes a image onto a set of orthogonal bases and results in a group of subimages with varying resolutions corresponding to the different frequency characteristics. The redundancy between successive frames of a image sequence can be removed by motion compensation techniques. Considering that the motion activities of the image can be characterized at different resolutions, multiscale motion estimation and compensation are adapted to exploit this intrinsic motion structure. Based on the motion-compensated difference signals, adaptive vector quantisation is implemented to achieve good compression performance
