Abstract :
The state of the personal communication telephone market is compared with the forecasts made in the late 1980s, and lessons to be learned from the discrepancies are summarised. The role of the semiconductor industry, traditionally seen as merely a supplier of components, is foreseen in terms of technological development including the design and packaging of large-scale digital and complex analogue products, in closer relationship with original equipment manufacturers and operators. Some predictions of market demand and technology trends until 1997 are offered
