Abstract :
In the second phase of DO-160 C, Section 20 HIRF type testing, the EUT (equipment under test) is subjected to RF fields in the range 30 MHz-(1.215 or 18 GHz), by radiating the EUT with antenna generated fields. Design engineers are concerned about the high cost of testing to 200(+) V/m. An alternate approach, using 10-15-W amplifiers, a signal generator, and a hand held probe is presented. The total cost of the system is less than $15000 and yields 90% confidence in complying with the DO-160. Alternatively, the equipment can easily be used to pinpoint problems on aircraft. The near-field measurement technique can identify both case and cable penetrations quickly in the 1-100-MHz range. The method has been successfully used for over five years on military aircraft avionic systems
