Abstract
While the fundamental need for research by regional electricity companies (RECs) has not changed since their formation, the climate and types of support for this research are now markedly different. Distribution research is now more strategically linked to the needs of RECs and this has already had some impact on the range of projects which are currently in progress. Research is now carried out in a wider range of organisations than before, each having its own particular range of skills and attractions which the new REC customer wants to buy
