Abstract
The author describes TURBOchannel, an I/O interconnect that allows several I/O options to connect one system. TURBOchannel is a synchronous, scalable interconnect with a concise, efficient protocol optimized for I/O applications. It achieves low-latency I/O transactions, and high-performance block DMA transactions across a low-signal-count interface. The geographic slot address and option ROM identification allow automatic configuration of systems. The hardware, firmware, and system characteristics of TURBOchannel are reviewed.<>
