Abstract :
The authors forecast trends in Unix software by first looking at the ways people forecast. Growth, increased complexity, diversification, coevolution with its environment, and information technology are seen as the trends. Heterogeneous, large-scale networking, multiprocessing, complex input and output-graphics, solar imaging, sound, and voice-and raw processing and storage power are all shaping Unix and being shaped by its evolving demands.<>
