Abstract :
It is projected that electronic design automation (EDA) tools and environments will be much different in 1995 than they are today. The top-down design methodology, driven by new technologies such as synthesis, mixed-level simulation, and standard HDLs (hardware description languages), will change the design paradigm from logic implementation to system specification, where the design tools take care of the implementation details. The author presents his view of what the coming design environment will be like by exploring the origins of the traditional design methodology, the benefits of the synthesis-based top-down methodology, and what EDA tools will be available in 1995 to support this methodology.<>
