Abstract :
It is projected that, with the advent of a mature EDA (electronic design automation) industry and the establishment of supportable standards, the role of the ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) vendor will change. Over the next years, systems will grow to many millions of gates, while project development cycles will continue to shrink. It is concluded that the challenge for the ASIC vendor will be to get the system right the first time, while providing a means for customers to differentiate their products from those of their competitors.<>
