Abstract
Summary form only given. Work pursued by several groups has lead to the development of erbium-doped planar waveguide amplifiers, which have been demonstrated as a viable alternative for erbium-doped fiber in long-haul telecommunication applications. With a typical length of 4.5 cm these integrated optical amplifiers are able to deliver 10 dB of gain at 1.53 /spl mu/m with 980-nm pump powers of 130 mW. In this paper we believe we present the design and operation of the first passively mode-locked fiber laser that incorporates an Er-Yb co-doped silica planar waveguide amplifier into the cavity.
