Abstract
The authors present a possible architecture for a future substation control and protection system utilising advanced information technology, and having a conventional coordinated control and protection system as a `base´. The reliability and advantages of the new system are discussed, and it is shown how such a system can relieve much of the processing load from the control centre computer and the SCADA system
