Abstract :
Summary form only given. Summary form only given. An optical network connection can cross both local-exchange (LEC), dispersive conventional fiber (CF) network segments and long-distance (LD), low-dispersion (low-D) fiber backbone network segments. We previously reported 8/spl times/2.5 Gbit/s wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission through this configuration in the MONET New Jersey Network, and found that nonlinearity in a LD segment of low-D fiber can greatly reduce the effective dispersion limit of following CF segments. We now examine reduction of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) power levels in the LD spans to eliminate this problem.
