Abstract
Standards for the provision of interactive moving pictures using an inexpensive digital storage medium such as compact disk or DAT are considered to be an essential item for the development of the related hardware and software industry. The author reports the background, the workplan, and the procedure to be adapted in the selection of a standard for coded representation of moving images and sound which are being discussed in the Moving Pictures Coding Experts Group of ISO/IEC with the target of a draft proposal of standard to be completed by September 1990. Test procedures are discussed, along with issues of VLSI implementability
