Abstract
The differences between two distinct formulations of the coupled mode method are analyzed and justified. The difference is interpreted in terms of the continuity of the axial components of the electromagnetic field. The original Schelkunoff formulation (1952) of the coupled mode method is shown to converge in a more efficient way than Ogusu´s formulation (1977)
