Abstract
The authors detail some of the research and concepts that have been developed within the Hull-Lancaster Communications Research Group at the University of Hull aimed at providing an embedded ionospheric sounding capability that would exist as a normal function of an adaptive radio terminal. In particular, close attention has been paid to designing sounders for long-range HF radio systems that can operate in a beyond line-of-sight mode. Sounders developed include a segmented swept FM and complementary sequence sounder for HF radio propagation analysis and that can be used by an adaptive frequency management system. All the sounders developed are heavily dependent upon the use of powerful high-speed digital signal processing (DSP) devices
