Abstract :
This presentation describes the importance of communication network infrastructure to support the achievement of European Union policy goals, economic growth and employment. The future Internet will run on a high-speed broadband optical fibre infrastructure. Research is required to match the requirements of users, applications and services to the capabilities of the infrastructure.
