Experiences in installation and operation for a sub-station control and protection system

The authors describe how Iberdrola, the largest of Spain´s private electric power utilities has recently, in conjunction with the Electrotecnica Arteche Hermanos Company and the Basque Country University, completed the installation of an integrated control and protection system at its Castro la Plana transformer substation. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the most salient aspects of its commissioning, and the advantages achieved in the operation and maintenance of this new installation, with special reference to those aspects which have involved an improvement over installations that are based on conventional control and protection systems
