Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that certain specialist technical subjects, in this case distribution protection, can be successfully taught to modestly qualified staff who often have only a limited understanding of networks and protection. The appropriate technical knowledge required to complement their practical know-how is presented in a comprehensive but straight forward manner. The subjects taught include fault level calculations using symmetrical components. The need for, use and siting of pole mounted switchgear and the characteristics of source switchgear. Also included are the principles needed to enable all the associated protection to be graded safety and correctly
