Abstract
The effect of the rolloff factor, FEC, and multipath diversity on the capacity for multiple narrower-band carriers systems, i.e. OC-CDMA, where the overlapping of adjacent carriers are permitted, are investigated. The performance of OC-CDMA is compared with FD/CDMA, where all the narrower-band carriers are mutually disjoint. Our qualitative and quantitative study exhibits that (1) wider-band carriers systems (with fewer carriers) outperform narrower-band carriers systems (with more carriers) as far as overlapping is not involved, and (2) narrower-band carriers systems are comparable to wider-band carriers systems in capacity when powerful error correcting coding and overlapping of adjacent carriers are exploited; (2) implies that overlapping of adjacent carriers compensates for capacity loss introduced by dividing the available spectrum into multiple narrower-band subspectra while the merits of FD/CDMA are fully exploited
