Abstract :
Studies of distribution systems in the United States indicate that approximately 60% of distribution system losses are attributed to distribution transformers, with core losses accounting for 80% of the transformer loss, or about 45% of total system losses. The authors describe transformer core development that led to commercially available amorphous metal transformers and the analysis of the economic benefits to utility systems if strategies regarding the use of amorphous metal transformers for efficiency improvements, energy conservation, or demand side management are implemented. They also discuss the environmental concerns over power plant emissions, and establish the contribution amorphous transformers can make to reduced emissions
