Abstract
Recently electric utilities have paid increased interest to load management with batteries. The authors study the possibilities of batteries to perform peak shaving at the customer side of the kWh-meter. The economic efficiency is discussed as a function of tarification formula and the time duration of the peak to be shaved. Battery and power electronics technologies involved are presented and commented upon. The service expected from the batteries is more severe than in common applications. Therefore, battery tests have been carried out at Laborelec and results after a one half year test program are presented
