Abstract :
A fractionally spaced maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (FS-MLSE) receiver is described. The FS-MLSE algorithm is effective in combating the intersymbol interference (ISI) in a multipath fading environment where the multipath delay spread is comparable to the transmitted symbol duration or only a fraction of it. The intermediate values (other than the symbol values) required by the FS-MLSE algorithm are obtained by interpolation from the symbol decisions and the Nyquist filter coefficients. Simulation results show that the FS-MLSE algorithm exhibits a significant performance improvement over the conventional symbol-spaced MLSE algorithm in a relatively short delay spread environment
