Abstract :
In this paper the outlines of a novel technique to identify the optimal location for UPFC is discussed. Based on the repeated AC power flow method, the calculation of available transfer capacity (ATC) using UPFC is proposed. In order to increase ATC, voltage improvement as well as minimum capital cost the deployment of UPFC is suggested. By employing a combination of capital cost indices and search for suitable locations for UPFC a cost function is developed. The proposed optimisation process has been examined on modified IEEE 30-bus test system. The results show significant improvements compared to the exiting methodologies. The application of this paper lies within the new de-regulation of power systems where a great deal of emphasis has been put on transmission open access leading to more efficient utilisation of the existing facilities.
