Abstract :
This paper presents an evaluation of inverter and cable losses in adjustable speed drive systems with long motor leads. Analyses and simulations were conducted to determine the motor/drive system losses as a function of cable length, switching frequency and loading conditions. Simulation and experimental results are presented for 5 kVA, 20 kVA and 30 kVA motor/drive systems at switching frequencies of 2 kHz, 6 kHz and 10 kHz and cable lengths of 10 ft and 300 ft. Results show the need for possible inverter derating with long cables at higher switching frequencies
