Abstract :
This paper deals with the development of the drive system for SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy). A special and unique direct drive motor design has been developed, which allows the telescope to be controlled in three dimensions simultaneously. The motor design and a first test arrangement are presented. Test results are discussed
