Abstract :
Many similarities exist between digital magnetic storage systems and baseband data transmission. Instead of delivering data spatially, as in baseband data transmission, the digital storage system delivers data temporally. This paper provides an overview of digital magnetic storage, including the recording process underlying the generation of signal, noise, distortion, and interference, the unique characteristics and constraints of the magnetic recording channel, and the signal processing and coding methods which are deployed ubiquitously in today´s magnetic disk drives.
