  • Abstract
Brushless DC motor drive systems are a multi-disciplinary technology, with each of the component disciplines developing rapidly. The design of a specific topology of machine is derived from equations which relate the physical dimensions, material properties,a nd supply conditions to the required performance. Whilst elementary magnetic circuit analysis techniques are generally employed to establish the likely basis of a successful design, more advanced techniques are required to aid the refinement of designs. In order to illustrate the importance of an integrated design approach, not only for brushless DC motor drives but also for other systems based on permanent magnet excited machines, a number of case studies are considered
