Abstract
Recent activities in advancing surface transportation systems have focused on the development of intelligent vehicle highway systems (IVHS) and in particular automated highway systems. They aim to enhance system operation and maintenance in order to reduce congestion, enhance safety, reduce travel time, improve trip quality and produce beneficial effects on the environment. Another important component of the overall program in advancing surface transportation is the Corridor project. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for route guidance combined with lane assignment, on urban highways in corridor systems as a means of traffic control that can be integrated with overall plans for controlling traffic in such systems. The proposed algorithm makes use of a simulator that is capable of micro-modeling traffic on semi or fully automated highways
