Abstract
The author examines the successful management of industrial health and safety in the UK by presenting four main messages: first that there is a real and substantial amount of work-related accidents and ill health in Great Britain; second, that most accidents are preventable; third that high standards of occupational health and safety can be achieved by purposeful and sustained management control; and finally that a preventative approach using loss control techniques is not merely altruistic-it can save lives and save money at the same time
