Abstract
Amidst the amazing surge in laser material processing papers and industrial developments there are threads which indicate that engineers need to take a new look at what has happened and adjust their attitudes to many fixed concepts of what is good and bad engineering. The author sets out to illustrate why a new look is needed in the areas of welding, cutting, surface treatment and even the design of machine tools themselves
