Abstract
The International Submarine Races (ISR) is an engineering design competition open to all people over the age of 15 from high schools, colleges, universities, companies and corporation or individuals interested in the technology. The focus of the races is on the engineering principles and technology required to design a human powered submarine. This paper addresses the creation of the ISR and its growth over time. The ISR has provided a stimulus for technological growth through engineering education that has attracted both academic attention and public interest.
