Abstract
We investigate the possibility of using reference governors to control a supplemental torque source (STS) in turbocharged diesel engines in the idle mode. The reference governor prescribes the torque that the STS needs to generate during transients caused by a load change to keep engine speed and air-fuel ratio within specified limits. By enforcing these limits engine stall and visible smoke emissions can be prevented. On the theoretical side, some generalizations of the reference governor scheme are described
