Abstract
The mismatch, in terms of quality and quantity, between the requirements of industry and the graduate output from academia with RF and microwave skills is well known. Collaborations between Middlesex University and industry have highlighted some of these problems and the authors address some of the principal issues relating to practical RF design. In particular, they discuss how RF theory and techniques can be taught with an emphasis on practical design, without compromising the rigorous mathematical treatment which is necessary for the proper development of the subject. A recent innovation at Middlesex is the teaching of RF and microwave technology through design tutorials rather than conventional lectures and this is discussed, together with other teaching methods
